Iran inaugurates ME's largest thermal power plant

(MENAFN) The Islamic Republic of Iran launched a 2.8-gigawatt (GW) thermal power plant, the largest in the Middle East, reported Xinhua News citing Tehran Times. Construction of the plant, which would boost the Islamic Republic's electricity generation capacity by 6 percent, began in 2003. By the end of the current Iranian calendar year, March 20, 2013, the country's power generation capacity would reach 70 GW from the current 67 GW. It is worth noting that Tehran, which currently provides electricity to Turkey, Armenia, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iraq, launched 16 new power stations in the current calendar year, with a total capacity of 2.6 GW.
