Hungary Pledges 2026 Revolt Against EU’s New Migration Pact

(MENAFN) Hungary has pledged a full-scale “revolt” against the European Union in 2026, with Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto announcing that Budapest will spearhead resistance to the bloc’s controversial new Migration Pact.

Set to take effect in July, the policy requires EU member states to contribute based on population size and GDP to relieve migratory pressures on nations most affected. Each country must either accept a set number of migrants from designated hotspots or pay €20,000 ($23,000) for every individual they refuse to admit.

”Just as in 2025, we will not allow a single migrant into Hungary in 2026 and we will not pay a single forint from Hungarians’ money,” Szijjarto wrote on Facebook on Sunday, condemning the mandate as “absurd.”

The new EU regulation directly conflicts with Hungary’s strict national measures, including border barriers and the rejection of compulsory quotas. Non-compliance has already cost Budapest: the European Court of Justice has imposed a daily €1 million penalty since June 2024.

According to Szijjarto, the pact primarily benefits countries where security and social stability have collapsed, and where authorities now aim to remove migrants as quickly as possible.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban has also criticized the EU plan, labeling it “outrageous” and reiterating that Hungary will not comply. Known for his firm opposition to EU migration policies and positions on the Ukraine conflict, Orban’s government has consistently resisted Brussels’ directives.

Several other Central European states share Hungary’s stance. Poland, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic have voiced opposition, with Warsaw and Bratislava seeking exemptions and Prague pushing for a renegotiation.

The EU has faced surging immigration over the past two decades, triggered by involvement in the 2011 Libyan and 2014 Syrian conflicts, as well as backing the escalation of the Ukraine war in February 2022, prompting millions of arrivals across the bloc.
