Belgium claims third place of World Cup


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) KUWAIT, July 14 (KUNA) -- Belgium end their 2018 World Cup journey finishing in third place for the first time in their history, after defeating England 2-0 in the play-off at the Saint Petersburg stadium.
England was in control most of the game, but Belgium comes out on top with a quick goal and eventually doubling the score late in the game.
Belgium opens the score early in the match with a diving kick by Thomas Meunier in the 4th minute and giving his team an edge on the game.
It was a good start for the Belgium team, to take the lead so early after a well set up attack starting from Romelu Lukaku's inter pass to Nacer Chadli who then crosses it in the box to pass by the goalkeeper Jordan Pickford before reaching Meunier extended foot.
England came close to an equaliser as the Tottenham midfielder, Eric Dier found his way behind the Belgium defence to chip it over the goalkeeper but was cleared off the line by his club-mate and Belgium defender Toby Alderweireld.
Eden Hazard extends the lead for Belgium in the 82 minute after receiving a long pass by Kevin de Bruyne.
Hazard coolly fires low into the bottom left corner of the net, to score his third in this World Cup and to secure a historical win for Belgium.
