Olympic Committee vows to work for promoting sports


(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) KABUL (Pajhwok): International Olympic Day was observed on Saturday when speakers called for unity and peace in the country. They also promised promoting sports as part of current Olympic programme.

HafeezullahWali Rahimi, head of the National Olympic Committee and Physical Sports, said multiple programmes had been drawn up for the development of sports in the country.

He hoped under a 10-year strategy for furthering sport, drastic improvement would take place in different games in the county. In particular, he said, the committee would focus on promoting women€™s sports.

€œWe will witness a massive improvement in the area of sports in the coming decade. Better administration, capacity building, talent hunt and other initiatives will be among our priorities,€ he added.

Rahimi said this year International Olympic Day€™s theme was national unity and peace in order. The objective was to encourage all sportspeople to work for strengthening peace, he continued.

Noor Rahman Tarakhel, a tribal representative, said: €œLet€™s come together by celebrating this day. We should prove to the world that the people of Afghanistan are united and consider sports a way of unity and solidarity.€
