Pakistan- ECP to decide KP caretaker CM

(MENAFN- Tribal News Network) PESHAWAR: The parliamentary committee to select a candidate for the slot of caretaker chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Saturday failed to reach consensus over the matter and referred the matter to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Shaukat Yousafzai said the meeting of the parliamentary committee on Saturday failed to evolve consensus on the matter after which the issue has been referred to the electoral body. He said the government had suggested the names of former chief secretary Ejaz Ahmed Qureshi and Himayatullah Khan, while the names of Manzoor Afridi and Justice (Retd) Dost Mohammad Khan have been proposed by the opposition.

Earlier, former chief minister Pervaiz Khattak and opposition leader Maulana Lutfur Rehman had agreed on the name of Manzoor Afridi, but the PTI chief Imran Khan had rejected his name after which the matter was referred to the parliamentary committee. Atif Khan, Shah Farman and Mehmood Khan were included in the committee from the PTI, while the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) representatives included Anwar Saleem Khan, Mehmood Khan Betani and Fazle Ghafoor.

Earlier, the Awami National Party (ANP) leader Sardar Hussain Babak had criticised the PTI and JUI-F for deciding the committee members without taking other political parties into account. Likewise, the Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz (PML-N) leader Aurangzeb Nalotha also criticised the composition of the committee and demanded representation from all political parties.

The parliamentary committee had three days to decide the name of caretaker CM, but it failed to evolve consensus after which now the matter will be decided by the ECP. The electoral body will select one of the four candidates within two days.
