Two Indonesian maids have both been jailed by a Singapore court after pleading guilty – one to stealing, the other to disposing of – cash and jewelry taken from an employer of one of the maids.

Between June and August last year, a 32-year-old maid who worked for a woman surnamed Tan, 55, allegedly stole S$13,904 (US$10,477) worth of cash and jewelry from Tan's flat on the 13th floor of Block 723 on Tampines Street 72, Shin Min Daily News reported.

The stolen items included a S$5,000 gold necklace, a S$3,000 gold chain and $2,904 in Singapore dollars and other foreign currencies. Some of the items were handed to a 34-year-old Indonesian maid who worked next door, who helped exchange them for cash at a pawnbroker's shop.

On November 13 last year, the 34-year-old maid asked her employer to send her back to Indonesia immediately, claiming her husband had passed away.

She was then taken to the employment agency for a necessary procedure which included a general body search. During the search, she was found to have a wallet containing lots of foreign currency, plus a pawnshop receipt and a gold ring hidden in her panties.

The 34-year-old maid pleaded guilty on Thursday to one count of handling stolen items and jailed for two months and 10 weeks.

Meanwhile, the younger maid, who was the prime defendant, pleaded guilty to five counts of theft in a court hearing on April 11, when she was jailed for seven months.
