EU investigates Italy over Alitalia airline bridge loan

(MENAFN) The European Union has begun looking into Italy to determine whether it had the right to grant a bridge loan at a worth of USD1.1 billion in 2017 to Alitalia airline.

Italy has provided the airline with a loan for it to remain operative until the completion of a sale after it was put under bankruptcy protection in May 2017.

The EU Commission declared that its "current view is that the state loan may constitute state aid."

In its statement issued Monday, the Commission also announced its plan to conduct more investigations to find out whether the loan was illegitimate.
