274 UAE Teams Compete in the 5th Global Management Challenge

The first round of the Global Management Challenge (GMC) - the world’s largest strategy and management competition - has begun, with teams across the globe competing to win at a national level, ahead of the international finals to be held in Dubai in April 2018. This year, 923 UAE-based students have entered the competition across 274 teams. The teams will partake in several rounds of strategic challenges which simulate how businesses operate and compete in the global marketplace. The winning team in each round will demonstrate the best mix of resources and decision making in earning the highest net profit for their business. Abdulrahman Saqr, Director of HR, Al-Futtaim Automotive said: “The Challenge is an ideal platform for the development of leadership skills in young people, which are essential to produce a generation of qualified future leaders capable of building a knowledge economy and maintaining sustainable development. I am proud to see a growing number of UAE students participate each year, creating the opportunity to grow their skills, experience and network, especially as we prepare to host the international final in Dubai for the first time. At Al-Futtaim, we encourage innovation in all areas and support and nurture local talent to offer them every opportunity to grow and succeed.” Each year there are country-level competitions, winners of which then represent their countries at the GMC Global Finals. 2018 marks the 5th year the UAE will participate in the challenge, and the first time the international finals will be held in Dubai. The finals will see the top teams from over 30 countries come together in the emirate to compete and be crowned the Global GMC champion. Last year’s UAE edition of the Challenge saw unprecedented interest with over 900 participants, 253 teams and 423 female participants - a 30 per cent increase from 2016. The 2017 winning team included Khadija Al Marzouqi, Afra Al Mezaina, Auhood Al Ali and Ohood Ahmed from the Higher Colleges of Technology, who formed ‘United Spirits’, the first all-Emirati team to ever win the GMC. To reinforce the value of ‘learning by doing’ - an integral pillar of the GMC - Al-Futtaim Automotive sent the winners to Japan to learn best business practices, and to explore and understand the fundamentals of Japanese heritage and culture. The team of four visited the Tokyo Motor Show and took part in mentorship sessions with Toyota Japan’s Senior Management team. GMC is organised under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, exclusively sponsored by Al-Futtaim Automotive, a pioneer in the region’s automotive industry, with the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation (MBRF) as a Knowledge Partner and the Higher Colleges of Technology as the Strategic Academic Partner.
