EU voices concern over Turkey's judiciary

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, Feb 2 (KUNA) -- The EU on Friday voiced concern at status of the judicial and legal sectors in Turkey.

Reversal of a court decision to release Amnesty International Turkey Chair Taner Kilic and detention of members of the Executive Committee of the Turkish Medical Association "are latest examples of the worrying developments undermining rule of law and independence and impartiality of the judiciary in Turkey." EU High Representative Federica Mogherini and EU Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighbourhood policy Johannes Hahn, in a joint statement, said "the non-implementation of judgements, including the recent Constitutional Court ruling and continued detention of two journalists, in addition to the undermining of the rule of law, risks setting an unfortunate precedent as it casts serious doubts about the existence of effective legal remedy." The European Union expects the Turkish authorities to ensure that the Constitutional Court decision of January 11, 2018, is implemented and that the journalists are released without delay, the joint statement said.

"Concrete and lasting improvements in the area of rule of law and fundamental freedoms remain essential to the prospects of EU-Turkey relations," it added.

Meanwhile, Alexander Winterstein, a spokesperson for the European Commission, told a news conference today that the EU is looking into the possibility of holding a summit with Turkey but added that no date has been fixed as yet for the high-level meeting. (end) nk.rk
