Mahadayi dispute: Two bandhs in 10 days to hit Karnataka
24 Jan 2018

In a bid to resolve the Mahadayi water dispute, pro-Kannada organizations have called for two bandhs in the state over the next two weeks. While January 25 will witness a state-wide bandh, the second bandh on February 4 will only be for Bengaluru.

As per reports, the Bengaluru bandh will coincide with PM Narendra Modi's visit to the city to attend BJP's Parivarthana rally.

The bandhs

The reason behind the bandhs is to put pressure on the government at the Centre to resolve the Mahadayi water sharing issue between Karnataka and Goa.

Adding that the issue must be resolved quickly, Kannada Okkuta president Vatal Nagaraj said that the bandhs will not affect the normal life in the state, as not everyone is in favor of them.

Reactions

Reacting to the bandhs, BJP state chief BS Yeddyurappa said they have been called by the Opposition so that people are not able to attend PM Modi's Parivarthana rally on Feb 4.

Meanwhile, BJP leader Jagadish Shettar said, "This is a political game. If Congress can call for a bandh we will also call for one when Rahul Gandhi is in the state."
