Pence Reassure US Continued Support to Afghanistan


(MENAFN- Daily Outlook Afghanistan) KABUL - US Vice President Mike Pence during a meeting with President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has reaffirmed Washington's full support for peace, stability and economic development of Afghanistan, a statement from Presidential Palace said on Friday.
On the head of a high level delegation, Pence on Thursday evening arrived in Afghanistan and held a meeting with President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani on here, the statement said.
The US vice president recalled his country supported Afghanistan and it would continue supporting Afghanistan in different areas in the future unabated.
He hailed the bravery of Afghan security forces and government's efforts in the areas of anti-corruption, peace process, regional cooperation and good governance.
The US vice president said the purpose of US strategy for Afghanistan and South Asia was to bring peace and stability to Afghanistan. The strategy was announced five-month earlier by the US president.
President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani welcomed the US vice president and hailed US assistance, sacrifices in war against terrorism and its continued support to Afghanistan.
The two dignitaries termed 2017 a successful year for Afghan security forces, eradication of drugs and stressed over the timely conduct of upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections.
The president said US-Afghanistan relation have been based on joint strategic goals and had become more strengthened compared to the past.
Ghani termed US strategy vital for regional peace and stability and stressed over its implantation.
The president said peace in Afghanistan was vital for the region. He recalled government's achievements in area of anti-corruption, implementation of reforms and regional cooperation.
The leadership of Unity Government was present during the meeting, according to the statement.
A separate statement from US embassy in Kabul said Vice President Mike Pence met with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Abdullah, and other senior Afghan leaders at the Presidential Palace in Kabul on December 21.
Vice President Pence and President Ghani were accompanied by U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan John R. Bass and Resolute Support and U.S. Forces-Afghanistan Commander General John W. Nicholson, Jr. in talks highlighting President Trump's South Asia strategy and its positive effects on Afghanistan's security situation.
They also focused on prospects for peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan, the need for the Afghan government's continued progress on reforms, and the importance of preparing for timely parliamentary and presidential elections, according to the statement.
During the visit, Vice President Pence reaffirmed U.S. support for Afghanistan's Government of National Unity, as well as U.S. support to the Afghan people in the areas of peace, security, and economic development.
Vice President Pence also met with the leadership of U.S. Forces-Afghanistan and greeted the soldiers serving here. (Pajhwok)
