Sri Lanka bans polythene for election campaigning ahead of local polls

Colombo, Dec 15 (newsin.asia) - Sri Lanka's President, Maithripala Sirisena has instructed the island's Central Environmental Authority to ban the use of polythene for election campaigns ahead of a crucial local government election scheduled to be held in February, local media reported Friday.
Sirisena, who is the Minister of Environment, instructed the Central Environmental Authority to instruct all political parties to adhere to the rules or face strict action.
The President also instructed authorities to take prompt measures to improve waste management and ensure that politicians contesting the polls do not resort to any kind of wastage which would harm the environment.
Sri Lanka is to face a crucial local government election in February next year. Although the date of the election is yet to be announced, many candidates have begun preparing for their poll campaigns which will begin after an official announcement on the date.
In Sri Lanka, politicians resort to decorating their hometowns with large cut outs of them selves and engaging in speeches and public meetings. Posters of the candidates are also pasted in public areas while their towns are also adorned in their party color.
President Maithripala Sirisena, however has maintained that campaigning should be carried out without any adverse impact to the environment.
Sirisena, in a step to keep the environment clean, instructed the Central Environmental Authority in September to ban the use and manufacture of polythene products - plastic shopping bags and Styrofoam boxes across the island country.
Cabinet approval was granted for the island wide ban on the production of polythene less than 20 microns.
Polythene and Styrofoam is widely used by local shops to wrap lunch. Polythene shopping bags is also used in supermarkets and shops.
