Oman- Process to accredit 7 colleges of technology, 8 colleges of vocational technology initiated


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- The Ministry of Manpower (MoM) has started the process of accreditation of its seven colleges of technology and eight colleges of vocational technology.

H E Dr Muna bint Salim al Jardaniyah, Undersecretary for Technical Education and Vocational Training in MoM told Muscat Daily at the closing ceremony of the Huawei ICT Skill Competition at the Higher College of Technology in Al Khuwayr on Monday.

'We are now focusing on quality assurance. We are going through what we call a standardised assessment with Oman Academic Accreditation Authority (OAAA). The focus is to improve the quality of education and training. I oversee the functioning of seven colleges of technology and eight colleges of vocational training.

'We will be the providers of skilled manpower to the industry as per their requirements in various fields. It's like a joint effort with the private sector.' She said that a private sector representative will be in the college council or the board of trustees in every college or institute. Regarding the Huawei ICT Skill Competition, H E Dr Muna said, 'This was the first such competition. We are really proud to see that of the nine winners, the majority has been won by students from the Shinas College of Technology and the Higher College of Technology.

'We are preparing our students for the industry. Let's hope that they will do well internationally. Our students have participated internationally and got good rankings in different competitions like Injaz. We are proud of our partnership with Huawei. It's not only about the competition though it's important but it is the approach towards capacity building. We have strategic cooperation with Huawei. Since 2015, they have trained 400 Omani youths in the ICT sector.'

Leo Hong, CEO of Huawei Technologies Oman said, 'We have gathered today for the closing ceremony of Huawei ICT Skill Competition in Oman. A pool of 576 students from 11 colleges participated with great passion for learning and 227 students participated in the first round of the competition. As many as 80 of them passed the first round and attended the national final competition. Finally, nine students have been recognised as the best talents.' Six of these students will go to Huawei headquarters for next advanced competition in China, represent Oman to challenge the best teams from other nine countries.

'Huawei joined hands with the Ministry of Manpower for this competition. I believe it's going to contribute to the Oman vision, which is increasing national competitiveness through developing ICT talents,' Hong added.
