(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The Public Prosecution charged the man with using drugs A man who was accused of using drugs after his urine and blood samples tested positive for Oxazepam-a prescription only medicine has been cleared because he suffers from a kidney illness.
The Abu Dhabi Criminal Court of First Instance acquitted the Pakistani national after his lawyer presented evidence that confirmed that he suffered from kidney problems and the medicine was prescribed to him by doctors in his home country.
Police had detained the man after doctors found a big amount of the prescription-only medicine in hisblood.
The Public Prosecution charged the man with using drugs.
The Pakistani however denied the charge stressing that he had used the medicines while still at home after being prescribed to him by a doctor.
His lawyer told court that the man suffered from kidney illness and that a doctor in a Pakistan hospital had given him the medicines as part of his treatment.
The lawyer also noted that his client took himself to a hospital for the blood test because it's a requirement for his treatment and that he wouldn't have done so if he knew he was taking the medicines illegally.
The lawyer also presented medical documents to court confirming that the Pakistani suffered from kidney problems and had a prescription from a doctor allowing him to use the Oxazepam.
The judged based on the lawyer's evidence to clear the man from the charge of drug abuse.
Oxazepam can be used by people with liver or kidney disease after a prescription from a doctor. And while using this medicine that treats anxiety symptoms, one may need frequent blood tests.
Oxazepam should however be used for only for a short time and a patient should not take the medicine for longer or bigger amount than a doctor recommends because it can result into an addiction.
