Qatar and Sweden are working closely to further deepen and strengthen bilateral relations by exploring new areas of cooperation to enhance trade and investment, said Sweden's Ambassador (pictured) to Qatar.
Swedish companies are looking to establish partnership with their Qatari counterparts to tap business opportunities arising as a result of massive public investments in some of the promising sectors, which include healthcare, education, training and SMEs.
'Recently I was in the UAE to participate at the Arab Health fair where I gave a presentation highlighting investment opportunities in Qatar's health sector, as the country is investing heavily, which include nine new hospitals, several new clinics and health centres. Interestingly, some 37 Swedish companies which participated at the event have expressed their keen interest to invest in Qatar. Many of these firms deal in latest medical equipment and provide solutions for a number of diseases, including diabetes and cardiovascular, said Ewa Polano in an interview with The Peninsula. This overwhelming response is because of the fact that Qatar, despite global economic downturn and significant fall in energy prices, is the fastest growing economies in the region, having the highest investment (per capita) in the healthcare sector.
On Qatar's investment in Sweden, Polano said that Qatari investors are more keen to invest in real estate sector, and also establishing partnership with Swedish companies to grow bigger. 'We are also looking for Qatari investment in several promising areas, including in Swedish startups. I believe that together through partnership we can reach to Asia. By using Doha as a hub, we can serve big markets like China, India, Pakistan, Malaysia and Indonesia, she said.
Polano also said that, in line with the same objective, recently a Swedish company, Albina Snacks AB, opened a new nut packaging factory in Qatar, which is big enough to serve the entire Middle East region.
In the field of education, Polano said, a prominent Swedish institute (like UK's British Council) has developed a very interesting master's degree programme in English language, which will be tailor-made for Qatari students.
'Under the programme best Qatari students will go to leading Swedish universities, such as Royal Institute of Technology, to pursue higher studies. This is not a traditional master's degree, but it is combined with internship in big Swedish companies, the envoy said.
