(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) has said that it received 11,892 requests for national and international trademarks, patents, industrial models and copyrights in 2016.

Ahmed bin Muhammad al Saeedy, the director of Intellectual Property Department in MoCI said that this includes 11,340 requests for national and international trademarks, 369 for patents, 14 requests in the field of industrial models and 169 requests for copyrights.

He said, 'The sultanate pays high attention to intellectual property. We have signed many international agreements and conventions related to intellectual property and issued Royal Decrees related to this matter. We have also formulated laws and passed legislations that seek to protect intellectual property rights.'

Saeedy said that the project of archiving intellectual property requests electronically aims at facilitating work procedures in the department.

He said that the project supports digital transformation leading to paperless transactions over a period of time.

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has provided MoCI's Intellectual Property Department WIPOScan software and Industrial Property Automation System (IPAS) to manage intellectual property.

This helps to connect all sections under a single station, enabling users to submit requests electronically.
