UAE initiatives reflect leadership's keenness on improving humanitarian situation in Iraq: Hamdan bin Zayed

ERBIL, 29th September, 2016 (WAM) -- The initiatives launched by the UAE under the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan to help displaced people in Iraqi Kurdistan Region reflect the keen interest of the country in improving the humanitarian situation resulting from the escalation in Iraq, said H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler's Representative in the Western Region and President of the Emirates Red Crescent.
"The efforts being exerted by the UAE within this context are backed by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, and His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces," he commented on the Emirates Red Crescent's launching of number of new development projects to help thousands of displaced Iraqi people in Erbil province.
The new projects, which are a continuation of the UAE's humanitarian approach, will fulfil the needs of an increasing flow of displaced people to northern Iraq due to the current developments, he added, while noting that shelters, healthcare services, education, clean water, electricity and sewage services will be provided to the displaced in the region.
"The UAE has a long history of generous giving and initiatives that have helped solve a large number of urgent humanitarian issues, made a difference in the level of care and countered challenges that are a source of concern for humanity as they block efforts to achieve stability and the required development," he added.
Secretary-General of the Emirates Red Crescent Dr. Mohammed Ateeq Al Falahi, accompanied by UAE Consul-General in Kurdistan, Rashid Mohammed Al Mansouri, opened the projects in the Iraqi province.
These include a camp for 8,000 displaced people from Nineveh province, two schools for boys and girls, 30 shops, a library and administrative offices, according to Al Falahi.
Recently, the humanitarian agency opened a hospital to serve 50,000 refugees in Shaqlawa city and two model schools for boys and girls for displaced Iraqis residing outside Erbil city.
