Philippines Earthquake Death Toll Rises to Fourteen, Several Missing
(MENAFN) A powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck offshore near the southern Philippines on Monday, leaving at least 14 people dead and seven others missing, according to authorities.
The quake hit near Sarangani province off Mindanao island, causing buildings to collapse and triggering tsunami warnings across parts of the region, based on reports from the United States Geological Survey.
The Philippines’ Office of Civil Defense said in a preliminary assessment that 14 fatalities have been confirmed so far, while search operations continue for the missing individuals. Officials also estimate that around 10,000 families have been affected by the disaster.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warned that tsunami waves of more than 3 meters (10 feet) above normal tide levels could impact some coastal areas following the quake.
Emergency response teams from local, regional, and national agencies are continuing damage assessments and coordination efforts to deliver aid to affected communities.
Authorities in both the Philippines and Indonesia urged residents in vulnerable coastal zones to move to higher ground as a precaution while monitoring for potential aftershocks and sea-level changes.
