Iran Halts Israel Strikes
(MENAFN) Iran declared a halt to its military offensive against Israel on Monday, drawing a hard line with a stark warning that any continued Israeli aggression in Lebanon would trigger a far more devastating retaliation.
"Following the aggressions and evils of the brutal Zionist regime in South Lebanon and the Dahiya region, which took place with the support of the criminal America, the powerful armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran gave a painful response to this regime in order to support the oppressed people of Lebanon," the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters said in a statement carried by a semi-official news agency.
The military command added that Israel and its allies "should have learned" lessons from Tehran's response before formally declaring: "On this basis, the cessation of armed forces operations is announced."
The announcement came with a pointed caveat. The command cautioned that "if the aggressions and evils continue, including in South Lebanon, much more severe and crushing measures will be on the way."
The latest flare-up traces back to Sunday, when Israel bombed the Lebanese capital Beirut in violation of an existing ceasefire — a strike that prompted Iran to unleash missiles at northern Israel, setting off successive waves of Israeli airstrikes deep inside Iranian territory.
Behind the scenes, diplomatic channels appeared to be working in parallel. An Israeli newspaper reported that Tel Aviv and Washington relayed a message to Tehran pledging that Israel would stand down provided Iran did not resume its missile campaign.
US President Donald Trump added his voice to the calls for de-escalation early Monday, taking to his Truth Social platform to demand that Israel and Iran cease hostilities "immediately" in the aftermath of the day's exchanges.
