Pentagon Turns Press Office into Classified Facility
(MENAFN) The Pentagon has reportedly redesignated its press office as a classified facility, effectively restricting journalists from entering a space that has long served as a central hub for interaction between the military’s public affairs officials and the media.
According to reports, the change follows internal organizational adjustments that moved Pentagon speechwriters into the public affairs office, prompting new security requirements for the shared workspace.
The facility is also being upgraded with access to the Secret Internet Protocol Router Network (SIPRNet), a secure system used for handling classified communications.
Acting Pentagon press secretary Joel Valdez was cited as saying, “The Pentagon Press Office has been redesignated as a Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility due to speechwriters from the Office of the Secretary of War sharing the facility.”
He added that the speechwriters "routinely handle classified material and require SIPRNet access."
The redesignation means journalists will no longer have access to the office area as it transitions into a restricted-security environment.
