US Maintains Blockade of Strait of Hormuz
(MENAFN) The United States has confirmed that its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz remains active, with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth warning on Saturday that Washington is prepared to resort to military measures if diplomatic negotiations fail to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue security summit in Singapore, Hegseth declared, “The blockade is very much still in place.” He explained that once an agreement is reached—or not, depending on Iran’s decision—the strait would become “an open strait, a toll-free strait that the entire world can use, which is the way that it should be.”
The Pentagon chief emphasized readiness, stating, “Right now, we're focused on being postured and prepared to reengage if we have to,” while expressing confidence that the US will secure a deal that aligns with American interests.
Responding to Iran’s claim of control over the strategic waterway, Hegseth countered: “They want to say that they control the strait, but we do, and everything behind the scenes shows that we are in control when it comes to that, including how the dynamics of the negotiation are coming together.”
On nuclear talks, he stressed that President Donald Trump’s position remains firm: any agreement must permanently block Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. “We think we’re in a good place to make that deal,” Hegseth said, adding: “Or they can deal with the War Department. And we are prepared. We’re postured even stronger today than we were on day one to address it that way if we have to.”
