UN Report Says Conflict-Related Sexual Violence More Than Doubles in 2025

(MENAFN) According to reports, the United Nations has documented a dramatic increase in conflict-related sexual violence in 2025, with verified cases more than doubling compared with the previous year.

The annual report by the UN secretary-general stated that violence linked to armed conflicts rose sharply and was characterized by severe brutality, with women and girls accounting for the overwhelming majority of victims.

According to the report, 9,788 verified cases were recorded in 2025, compared with 4,617 cases documented in 2024. The findings were submitted to the United Nations Security Council and later released publicly.

The report cautioned that the documented figures do not reflect the full scale of the problem, noting that many incidents remain unreported or undocumented due to ongoing insecurity, restricted humanitarian access, and challenges in gathering evidence in conflict zones.

It also highlighted that reductions in international missions and budget constraints have weakened monitoring efforts, particularly as programs focused on gender issues and the protection of women are often among the first to face cuts.

The 17th edition of the report covers 21 conflict-affected countries and identifies 77 parties, including both state and non-state actors, linked to verified cases of conflict-related sexual violence.

Among the newly listed parties are the Israeli armed and security forces and the Russian armed and security forces. The report also added three non-state armed groups operating in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
