UAE Strongly Condemns Drone Strike On Barakah Infrastructure
Abu Dhabi, May 17 (Petra) -- The United Arab Emirates has strongly condemned a "treacherous terrorist attack" that targeted an electrical generator outside the inner perimeter of the Barakah nuclear power plant in the Al Dhafra region.
The attack was carried out by a drone that crossed into Emirati territory over the country's western border. Officials confirmed that the strike resulted in no casualties and had no impact on radiological safety levels.
In a statement carried by the official Emirates News Agency (WAM) on Sunday, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs categorized the assault as a dangerous escalation, an unacceptable violation, and a direct threat to national security.
The ministry emphasized that targeting peaceful nuclear power plants constitutes a flagrant breach of international law, the United Nations Charter, and international humanitarian law. Such actions carry severe risks for civilian populations, the environment, and broader regional and international security. The ministry further noted that relevant international standards and conventions including the principles and resolutions of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) strictly dictate that peaceful nuclear facilities must be protected and never exposed to hostile acts or military threats.
The UAE declared that it will not tolerate any compromise to its security or sovereignty under any circumstances. Abu Dhabi reaffirmed that it retains its full sovereign, legal, diplomatic, and military rights to confront any threat, claim, or hostile act. These measures will be exercised in accordance with international law to ensure the protection of the nation's sovereignty, national security, territorial integrity, citizens, residents, and visitors.
