World Ethnosport Union Promotes “Ethnosports 2027”
(MENAFN) World Ethnosport Union President Bilal Erdogan announced on Saturday an expanded initiative aimed at developing “Ethnosports 2027,” envisioned as a global event modeled on the Olympics but focused on traditional sports.
Speaking during a live broadcast with the Anadolu Sports Desk, he said sports play a key role in transmitting cultural heritage across generations, adding that despite the influence of modern culture, there remains a strong public interest in tradition.
He explained that the goal is not simply to restore traditional sports to their historical popularity, but to “plant the seed in the hearts of today’s young generation,” linking cultural heritage with modern opportunities and contemporary life.
Erdogan also referenced children in the Gaza Strip, saying: “We also want to remind everyone attending the Ethnosport Culture Festival about the children in Gaza who cannot play happily and peacefully with their families.”
He noted that research conducted among youth in Türkiye shows that around half are not currently engaged in sports activities, suggesting traditional sports could help increase participation.
According to him, those who have left sports or never participated could be re-engaged through culturally rooted athletic disciplines.
Erdogan also shared personal remarks, saying his favorite sport to watch is mounted archery, while football would be his choice if he were to compete personally.
As a supporter of Fenerbahçe, he commented on the team’s performance, noting that it is collecting strong results and currently sits in second place but narrowly missed out on the championship.
He added that in football, “a footballer can lose the championship because of their morale in a single match,” emphasizing the importance of psychological factors in performance outcomes.
