Pentagon Was Unaware of Halted US Troop Deployment to Poland

(MENAFN) US defense officials were reportedly not informed in advance about the decision to suspend the planned deployment of 4,000 American troops to Poland, according to reports released Thursday.

One US official reportedly described the situation by saying, “We had no idea this was coming,” while noting that American and European officials had spent the past day attempting to determine the reasons behind the move and whether additional unexpected decisions could follow.

The developments came after reports indicated that the deployment rotation involving more than 4,000 US troops assigned to Poland had been put on hold, despite some military personnel and equipment already heading toward Europe.

Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges, the former commander of US Army forces in Europe, reportedly emphasized the strategic importance of the deployment, saying the army’s mission in the region "is all about deterring the Russians, protecting America’s strategic interests and assuring allies."

He added: "Now a very important asset that was coming to be part of that deterrence is gone."

Hodges also praised Poland’s relationship with Washington, saying the country consistently acted as a reliable ally and had avoided criticizing US President Donald Trump. "They do all the things that good allies are supposed to do … And yet, this happens.”
