Türkiye Rejects Greek Objection Over “Turkish Straits” Term in UN Exchange

(MENAFN) Türkiye has formally rejected Greece’s objection to the use of the term “Turkish Straits” at a recent United Nations Security Council session, according to reports citing a letter sent to the UN.

In correspondence addressed to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the Security Council presidency, Türkiye’s UN Ambassador Ahmet Yıldız described Greece’s objection as “unfortunate” and politically motivated, arguing that it distracted from the substantive agenda of the meeting.

As stated by reports, the Turkish side “firmly and totally rejects” Athens’ position, maintaining that objections to established geographical terminology do not support constructive diplomacy or regional stability.

Ankara defended the term “Turkish Straits” as a widely recognized geographic reference describing the Istanbul Strait and the Çanakkale Strait, both under Turkish sovereignty. The letter stressed that the terminology is “descriptive, geographically accurate and fully compatible” with the Montreux Convention.

Türkiye also argued that international practice typically prioritizes official national naming conventions and noted that the term has been used in various international frameworks, including documents associated with NATO and the International Maritime Organization.

According to reports, the Turkish envoy further emphasized that the Montreux Convention governs maritime passage through the straits but does not regulate geographical naming conventions beyond its legal scope.

The letter also rejected Greek objections as inconsistent with established practice, with Ankara suggesting that alternative terminology attempts reflect broader political disagreements rather than legal or geographical considerations.

The exchange highlights continuing diplomatic friction between the two NATO members over historical and territorial terminology, even as both remain engaged in broader regional security discussions.
