Qatar Supports Pakistani-Led Mediation Efforts to End Iran War

(MENAFN) Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani has thrown his country's full diplomatic weight behind Pakistani-led mediation efforts aimed at forging a lasting resolution to the US-Iran conflict, underscoring growing regional urgency to consolidate a fragile ceasefire into a permanent settlement.

Qatar's Foreign Ministry confirmed the intervention following a phone call Sunday between Sheikh Mohammed and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, with details shared via a statement posted to the US social media company X.

During the exchange, Sheikh Mohammed pressed all parties to engage constructively with Islamabad's peace initiative, emphasizing "the need for all parties to respond to these efforts in order to create the appropriate conditions for progress in the negotiations, leading to a comprehensive agreement that achieves sustainable peace in the region," the ministry said.

Doha signalled an unequivocal commitment to the process, with the ministry confirming Sheikh Mohammed expressed Qatar's "full" support for Islamabad's efforts.

The Qatari premier also credited Pakistani diplomacy with a concrete breakthrough already secured at the negotiating table. "These efforts contributed to reaching a ceasefire" between Washington and Tehran, he stressed during the call.

The two leaders additionally used the conversation to review bilateral relations between Qatar and Pakistan, discussing avenues to further strengthen those ties, the ministry noted.

The diplomatic push comes against a backdrop of sharply elevated regional tensions. The US and Israel launched strikes against Iran on Feb. 28, setting off a chain of retaliatory moves by Tehran against Israel and American allies across the Gulf, along with the closure of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

Pakistani mediation produced an initial ceasefire on April 8, though subsequent talks held in Islamabad fell short of yielding a durable accord. US President Donald Trump subsequently extended the truce without a fixed deadline — a move that has opened diplomatic space for negotiations toward a comprehensive and permanent end to the conflict.
