Kremlin Elite Regiment Marks 90 Years with Ceremonial Horseback Display

(MENAFN) Russia’s Presidential Regiment has celebrated its 90th anniversary with ceremonial displays, including a mounted performance by its elite cavalry unit, according to reports.

The regiment, based inside the Kremlin, is responsible for securing the complex and protecting high-ranking state officials.

The mounted displays are typically held on Cathedral Square within the Kremlin on a weekly basis and feature coordinated riding formations. The performances are widely regarded as one of Moscow’s notable military-style ceremonies and attract both domestic and international visitors. Rehearsal footage accompanied the event coverage.

Horses used by the regiment are sourced exclusively from Russian breeding farms. The cavalry unit primarily employs Trakehner, Hanoverian, and Russian horse breeds. A core group of twelve riders performs the main routine, while a larger formation of fourteen participates in the full ceremonial presentation.

Additional footage highlighted the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Alexander Garden near the Kremlin walls. This ceremony is conducted daily by the Special Guard Company and includes the Eternal Flame memorial, serving both as a symbolic duty and a public attraction.

The regiment was originally formed in 1936, though its anniversary is traditionally observed on May 7, marking its receipt of a major Soviet military decoration in 1965. Historical records also note that several of its battalions participated in the 1945 Victory Parade in Moscow following the end of World War II in Europe.
