Frontier Airlines Kills Runway Intruder at Denver Airport
(MENAFN) A Frontier Airlines aircraft fatally struck a pedestrian on the runway during takeoff Friday night at Denver International Airport, officials confirmed, in a shocking incident that left 12 passengers injured and temporarily grounded operations.
Denver International Airport confirmed the collision in an official statement published on X, the US-based social media platform. "Frontier Flight 4345 reported striking a pedestrian during takeoff," the airport said in a statement posted on the US social media platform X, adding that emergency crews responded to the scene.
Authorities say the unidentified individual had illegally breached the airport's outer perimeter fence before wandering onto an active runway, where they were struck approximately two minutes after the intrusion. The victim was declared dead at the scene and is not believed to have been affiliated with airport personnel.
A secondary hazard emerged when the aircraft's engine briefly caught fire following the collision — though crews from the Denver Fire Department swiftly contained and extinguished the blaze before it could escalate further.
All 231 passengers and crew aboard the aircraft at the time were unharmed from the fire, though 12 sustained minor injuries during the incident. Of those, five were transferred to nearby medical facilities for further evaluation and care.
The affected runway was immediately sealed off to allow investigators to examine the scene. Remaining passengers were shuttled via bus to the main terminal, with the majority subsequently boarding a replacement Frontier Airlines flight to continue their journeys.
No formal identification of the deceased has been released as authorities continue their investigation.
