Russia Says US-Israeli Strikes on Iran are “Unprovoked Aggression”

(MENAFN) Russia’s envoy to the United Nations condemned the recent US and Israeli military strikes on Iran, describing them as “another unprovoked act of armed aggression” during an emergency Security Council session on Saturday.

“Washington and West Jerusalem's actions are nothing other than yet another unprovoked act of armed aggression against a sovereign and independent UN member state in violation of the charter of the organization and of the fundamental principles of international law,” Vassily Nebenzia stated.

Nebenzia criticized the attacks as interference in Iran’s internal affairs, aimed at undermining a state that has opposed Western interests. “The US and Israel's irresponsible step, reckless step, as we warned previously, has already led to a sharp escalation of the situation across the region,” he added, stressing that the operation also represents “a betrayal of diplomacy.”

The emergency session was called by the permanent missions of France, Bahrain, China, Russia, and Colombia. Nebenzia noted that Russia and China requested the UK, currently serving as Security Council president, to hold the discussion under the agenda item “threats to international peace and security.”

“Attempts by the British presidency to artificially downplay the degree of danger of the current situation are simply unacceptable,” he said. He also criticized the UK for “grossly” ignoring the joint request from Russia and China to invite Jeffrey David Sachs, director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University, to brief the council.
