Catherine Baker

CATHERINE BAKER is a specialist in post-Cold War history, international relations and cultural studies, who researches the international politics of representing national identity and conflict in popular culture. She is the author of books including Sounds of the Borderland: Popular Music, War and Nationalism in Croatia since 1991 (2010) and Race and the Yugoslav Region: Postsocialist, Post-Conflict, Postcolonial? (2018), the editor of volumes including Gender in 20th Century Eastern Europe and the USSR (2017) and The Routledge Handbook of Popular Music and Politics of the Balkans (2024), and the co-editor of Off White: Central and Eastern Europe and the Global History of Race (2024). She also studies the cultural politics of international events, including the Eurovision Song Contest and the Olympic Games, and the politics of LGBTQ+ identity and history. In 2023 she led a study of the cultural relations and soft power impact of the ESC commissioned by the British Council in partnership with Liverpool City Council and the UK Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
