Ukraine's Umerov to Hold Talks with Trump Envoy Witkoff in Florida
(MENAFN) Ukraine's chief negotiator Rustem Umerov is set to hold talks with US President Donald Trump's special envoy in Florida as early as this week, a White House official confirmed to media on Wednesday.
The face-to-face between Steve Witkoff and Umerov arrives at a moment of stalled diplomacy between Kyiv and Moscow, with no additional details about the scope or agenda of the meeting immediately disclosed. The Russia-Ukraine conflict has broadly faded from the center of Washington's foreign policy attention in recent months, overshadowed by the escalating US-Israeli war against Iran.
Meanwhile, tensions sharpened Wednesday after Russia issued an extraordinary warning, calling on foreign nations to pull their diplomats and staff from the Ukrainian capital ahead of possible "retaliatory strikes" should Ukraine conduct any attacks during Victory Day celebrations on May 9.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova confirmed that a formal diplomatic note had been dispatched to all foreign missions and representative offices of international organizations accredited with the ministry. The note urged the respective governments and organizational leadership to treat the Defense Ministry's warning with the "utmost responsibility" and arrange for the "timely evacuation" of diplomatic personnel, other staff, and citizens from Kyiv.
In Yerevan, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy seized on a notable development while addressing the inaugural session of the 8th European Political Community summit in the Armenian capital — Russia's announcement that it would hold its annual Victory Day parade in Moscow without military hardware.
"If that happens, it will be the first time in many, many years. They cannot afford military equipment – and they fear drones may buzz over Red Square," said Zelenskyy.
The remarks echoed a statement issued by the Russian Defense Ministry on April 29, in which it confirmed that the country's military equipment column would not participate in the parade "due to the current operational situation."
