China Reaffirms Support for Iran Amid US Conflict Ahead of Trump Trip
(MENAFN) China on Wednesday expressed support for Iran amid its ongoing conflict with the United States, as Beijing prepares to host US President Donald Trump next week.
According to reports, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi during a meeting in Beijing that “China supports Iran in safeguarding its national sovereignty and security and appreciates Iran's willingness to seek a political solution through diplomatic channels.”
Wang also stated that a full halt to hostilities “is imperative,” warning that restarting the conflict “is unacceptable, and persisting in negotiations is particularly important,” as cited by China’s Foreign Ministry.
Araghchi’s visit to Beijing came at the invitation of Chinese officials and marked the first face-to-face talks between the two sides since the outbreak of war involving the US and Israel against Iran on Feb. 28.
Meanwhile, Trump is expected to visit China on May 14–15, according to the White House.
China’s Foreign Ministry said it remains in contact with Washington regarding the trip, which had previously been postponed due to the conflict.
The talks also took place against the backdrop of tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, which has been heavily disrupted amid military activity involving the US and Iran, affecting global energy flows.
Wang also addressed the situation in the waterway, stating that the international community broadly supports restoring safe maritime passage. “Regarding the Strait of Hormuz, the international community shares a common concern for restoring normal and safe passage through the straits, and China hopes that the parties involved will respond promptly to the strong calls from the international community,” he said, according to reports.
