S. Korea Reaffirms US Alliance Amid Signs of Strain in Ties
(MENAFN) South Korea has reiterated its commitment to maintaining and strengthening its alliance with the United States, even as concerns grow over recent tensions in bilateral relations.
Speaking before the National Assembly, the foreign minister emphasized that cooperation with Washington remains the cornerstone of South Korea’s foreign and security strategy. He noted that recent public concerns about the state of the relationship reflect strong interest in preserving the partnership rather than a rejection of it.
He called for more consistent and direct communication between the two sides to address outstanding issues and build greater trust, stressing that mutual respect should guide diplomatic engagement going forward.
Recent friction between Seoul and Washington has emerged in several areas, including restrictions related to intelligence sharing and disagreements linked to regulatory and economic investigations. These developments have contributed to speculation about potential strain in the alliance.
Despite this, South Korea has outlined plans to take a more active role in regional security, including strengthening defense capabilities and advancing discussions on military readiness and operational responsibilities on the Korean Peninsula.
The government also aims to expand cooperation not only with the United States but also with regional partners, including Japan and China, while pursuing broader trade arrangements to reduce economic uncertainty and diversify export markets.
On security issues involving North Korea, Seoul has reiterated support for a phased diplomatic approach aimed at addressing nuclear and missile concerns through dialogue and gradual engagement.
