Trump Announces Temporary Pause of “Project Freedom” in Strait of Hormuz

(MENAFN) The US president has announced a temporary suspension of a military initiative aimed at securing commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, saying the decision follows diplomatic progress and international requests.

In a public statement, he said the pause in the operation—referred to as “Project Freedom”—was agreed upon after consultations with Pakistan and other countries. He described the move as part of ongoing efforts connected to negotiations involving Iran and said it comes after what he called significant military progress in the region.

He added that while broader restrictions and security measures remain in place, the specific naval operation designed to escort or secure commercial vessels will be paused for a short period to allow space for potential final agreement discussions.

The initiative had been announced earlier as an effort to ensure safe passage for shipping through the strategically important waterway, despite objections from Iran regarding control and authorization of transit through the strait.

The announcement comes amid continued tension in the Gulf region following earlier military escalation involving the United States and Israel against Iran, which led to retaliatory actions and disruptions in maritime traffic. A ceasefire was later introduced through mediation efforts, though negotiations have struggled to produce a lasting settlement.

At the same time, reports indicate that Iran has introduced new administrative procedures governing ship movements through the strait, requiring vessels to comply with updated transit rules before receiving permission to pass.
