US Embassy Warns of Iran-Linked Militia Threats in Iraq
(MENAFN) The US Embassy in Iraq issued a warning Tuesday, stating that "Iraqi terrorist militias aligned with Iran” are still preparing potential attacks targeting American citizens and interests within the country, according to reports.
In an official statement, the embassy added that "Some elements associated with the Iraqi government continue to actively provide political, financial, and operational cover for these terrorist militias," highlighting concerns about internal support structures linked to these groups.
Officials strongly advised US nationals against traveling to Iraq under any circumstances and urged those already present to leave immediately. The embassy also clarified that "US Mission Iraq remains open while on ordered departure to assist US citizens in Iraq,” indicating that support services remain available despite the reduced presence.
Additionally, Americans were cautioned not to approach diplomatic sites due to safety concerns.
"Do not attempt to come to the Embassy in Baghdad or the Consulate General in Erbil in light of significant security risks," the statement said, instead encouraging communication through electronic channels.
The warning comes amid heightened regional instability following military strikes launched by the United States and Israel against Iran on Feb. 28, which led to retaliatory actions by Tehran against Israel and US-aligned countries in the Gulf, as well as the shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz.
Although a ceasefire was introduced on April 8 through mediation efforts, negotiations held afterward did not result in a permanent resolution. The truce was later prolonged by US President Donald Trump without a defined end date, as stated by reports.
