Two Migrants Die During Attempt to Cross English Channel from France

(MENAFN) Two migrants have died after an attempted crossing of the English Channel from the French coast early Sunday, according to reports from local media.

As stated by reports, around 82 people departed in a makeshift boat from Neufchâtel-Hardelot in the Pas-de-Calais region of northern France during the early hours of the morning.

The vessel later experienced suspected engine failure and drifted at sea before eventually running aground on a nearby beach.

Seventeen people who fell into the water were rescued offshore by maritime gendarmerie units, while 65 others were found aboard the boat. Two women were discovered dead inside the vessel, and several passengers were taken to hospital, including three individuals reported to be in critical condition.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
