Musk Seeks Removal of OpenAI Leadership
(MENAFN) Elon Musk is aiming to have OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and President Greg Brockman removed from their positions as part of a lawsuit scheduled for trial later this month.
In a court submission filed on Tuesday, Musk’s legal team detailed the remedies they intend to pursue if a judge and jury conclude that Altman and OpenAI committed fraud against him.
Musk initiated legal action against Altman and OpenAI in 2024, claiming that the artificial intelligence organization he helped establish nearly ten years ago misled and deceived him into contributing $38 million under the belief that it would continue operating as a nonprofit entity.
“Plaintiff will seek an order removing Altman as a director from the OpenAI nonprofit board and removing both Altman and Brockman as officers of the OpenAI for-profit,” Musk’s lawyers said in the filing.
His attorneys contended that the removal of officers and directors from charitable organizations is a standard legal remedy when such individuals fail to uphold or advance the organization’s public mission.
The filing further stated that Musk is requesting the court to compel OpenAI to revert to functioning as a fully legitimate nonprofit. OpenAI underwent a restructuring in October and now operates as a nonprofit entity holding a 26% share in its for-profit division, which includes ChatGPT.
Musk, Altman, and others jointly founded OpenAI in 2015 as a nonprofit artificial intelligence research lab. Musk departed the organization in 2018 after an unsuccessful attempt to convince its leadership to merge it with Tesla.
In 2023, Musk established a competing AI company called xAI, which created the Grok chatbot along with an image generation tool.
