Austrian Police Arrest Suspect in Baby Food Contamination Case

(MENAFN) A 39-year-old man has been arrested in Austria after rat poison was allegedly found in jars of baby food, according to police.

As stated by reports, the incident began two weeks ago when a jar of carrot and potato purée in the eastern state of Burgenland was discovered to be contaminated. The discovery led manufacturer HiPP to issue a recall of an entire product range as a precaution.

Authorities said five contaminated jars were recovered safely across Austria, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia before they could be consumed.

According to reports, Austrian newspaper Die Presse said the company received an email demanding €2 million (£1.73 million), which went unnoticed until after the ransom deadline had passed. The message reportedly gave the firm six days to pay and was sent on March 27 to an email account that is only checked every two to three weeks.

Police in Burgenland announced the arrest on Saturday. A spokesperson, Helmut Marban, said no further details about the suspect or the circumstances of the arrest could be released because the investigation is still ongoing.

Authorities believe at least one additional contaminated jar may still be in circulation and have issued public warnings on how to identify potentially tampered products.

Consumers have been advised to check for signs such as damaged or open lids, missing safety seals, unusual or spoiled odors, or a white sticker with a red circle on the bottom of the glass jar.
