Five Civilians Losse Their Lives in Drone Attack in Sudan’s Capital

(MENAFN) A paramilitary drone strike killed five civilians on Saturday after hitting a vehicle in greater Khartoum, according to a Sudanese rights group, marking the second such attack in the capital this week.

As stated by reports, drone attacks carried out by both Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), who have been at war since April 2023, have increased in recent months and in some cases have killed dozens in a single strike.

Emergency Lawyers, a legal advocacy group documenting abuses during the conflict, said an RSF drone struck a civilian vehicle on the Jammouiya Triangle road in southern Omdurman on Saturday morning, killing everyone inside. The area lies just across the Nile from central Khartoum.

The group added that the vehicle had been traveling from the Sheikh al-Siddiq area in White Nile state, located roughly 90 kilometers south of the capital.

As stated by reports, a separate drone strike last Tuesday hit a hospital in the Jebel Awliya area, about 40 kilometers south of central Khartoum. Security sources and witnesses said it was the first attack of its kind in the capital in several months.

Jebel Awliya had previously served as the RSF’s last stronghold in Khartoum state before it was retaken by the army during a counteroffensive that pushed paramilitary forces westward toward Darfur.

Reports indicate that the RSF carried out multiple drone strikes on Khartoum last year, mainly targeting military facilities, power stations, and water infrastructure.

In recent months, however, the capital has experienced relative calm, with more than 1.8 million displaced residents returning and domestic flights resuming at the airport, even though large parts of the city still lack electricity and essential services.

Fighting has since shifted mainly to Darfur, where the army lost its final base in October, and to the Kordofan region, where the RSF has been attempting to regain control over a key east-west highway.
