France Signals Impending Maritime Security Mission

(MENAFN) France’s foreign minister stated on Friday that an international maritime initiative described as a “defensive” mission in the Strait of Hormuz is expected to commence operations once conditions become suitable. The announcement reflects ongoing diplomatic and security efforts surrounding one of the world’s most strategically important waterways.

Jean-Noel Barrot emphasized that “The Hormuz blockade must stop, it must cease. There can be no blackmail, no blockade, nor any toll on a strait,” underscoring France’s position that international maritime passages are regulated by global law and “cannot under any circumstances be obstructed.” He further stressed that such waterways must remain open and free from interference under all circumstances.

He also pointed out that the increase in fuel prices, “being strongly felt at the pump,” was directly associated with developments in the Strait of Hormuz. According to him, France has already condemned these developments, viewing them as violations of international law with significant repercussions for the worldwide economy.

Barrot additionally highlighted that France has taken steps since the beginning of the crisis to reduce its impact, including policies aimed at shielding households and businesses from escalating energy costs. He noted that focused assistance has been directed toward industries most affected by rising fuel prices—such as fishing, agriculture, transportation, and heavy road freight operators—to help them manage and absorb part of the financial strain.
