Trump Claims US Will Take Over Cuba, Suggests Naval Pressure
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump said Friday that the United States could “take over” Cuba “almost immediately,” making remarks that also referenced potential military pressure, according to reports.
Speaking at an event in Florida, Trump claimed that “Cubans got problems” and suggested that a US naval presence could be used to compel political change.
“Cuba, which we will be taking over almost immediately,” he said, adding that a US aircraft carrier could be deployed offshore as part of the show of force.
He referred to the possibility of sending a vessel such as the USS Abraham Lincoln, saying it could be positioned close to the island. “On the way back from Iran, we'll have one of our big, maybe the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier, the biggest in the world, we'll have that come in, stop about 100 yards offshore,” he said.
Trump further suggested that such a deployment alone would be enough to force surrender, adding: “They'll say 'thank you very much. We give up,'” and, “I like to finish a job.”
The comments came shortly after Trump signed an executive order imposing new sanctions on individuals and entities linked to Cuba, citing national security and foreign policy concerns, according to reports.
