U.S. Envoy Rejects Claims of Mineral-Linked Aid to Zambia

(MENAFN) The departing United States ambassador to Zambia, Michael Gonzales, refuted allegations that Washington’s assistance to Africa’s second-largest copper producer was connected to access to critical minerals. He emphasized that such assertions were unfounded and did not reflect the nature of the partnership between the two countries.

Gonzales explained that the United States has maintained its support through various initiatives, including covering wages for approximately 23,000 healthcare personnel. He highlighted that the U.S. remains committed to delivering essential, life-saving medical services across the southern African country.

"Further, the US has resumed almost all health assistance after last year's review, providing over $400 million, including $75 million in medication," Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation cited Gonzales as saying on Friday.

He further noted that relations between the United States and Zambia have entered a new phase characterized by shared advantages and openness, signaling a strengthened and more transparent bilateral engagement.
