Trump Defends Seizure of Iranian Ships
(MENAFN) Donald Trump stated on Friday that the United States Navy’s interception of Iranian vessels in the Strait of Hormuz amounted to what he called "a very profitable business." He highlighted that the US had assumed control of Iranian shipments and petroleum as part of its enforcement measures in the region.
Speaking at a gathering in Florida, Trump remarked, "We took over the cargo. Took over the oil, a very profitable business. Who would have thought, we're sort of like pirates, but we're not playing games," emphasizing the economic gain tied to these actions.
While justifying the blockade, Trump asserted that Iran had long exploited the strategic waterway, saying, "the Hormuz Strait as a weapon for many, many years, they said they'll close it. So, they closed it, then I closed it on them." His comments framed the US response as a countermeasure to Tehran’s past threats.
Addressing the continuing nuclear negotiations with Iran, Trump expressed skepticism about the necessity of reaching an agreement. "Frankly, maybe we're better off not making a deal at all," he commented, although he later acknowledged that the current circumstances were unsustainable.
Tensions escalated when the United States and Israel initiated military operations against Iran on February 28, triggering counterattacks by Tehran directed at American allies in the Gulf and resulting in the shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz.
A truce was later declared on April 8 through mediation efforts by Pakistan. This was followed by diplomatic discussions held in Islamabad from April 11 to 12; however, these negotiations concluded without a finalized accord.
