Israeli Rights Group Seeks Information on Detained Gaza Flotilla Activists

(MENAFN) A legal advocacy organization representing Palestinians in Israel has called on Israeli naval legal authorities to immediately disclose the whereabouts of two detained foreign activists following the interception of a Gaza-bound aid mission, according to reports.

The group, Adalah, sent an urgent letter on Friday requesting clarification on the status of Thiago de Avila and Saif Abukeshek, who were taken into custody after the seizure of the Global Sumud Flotilla.

The organization also demanded that both individuals be granted access to legal counsel before any interrogation takes place.

According to reports, more than 160 activists were detained after Israeli forces intercepted 21 vessels from the humanitarian flotilla in international waters near the Greek island of Crete on April 30. Most detainees were later transferred to Greek authorities, while Israeli officials said the two named activists would instead be brought to Israel for questioning.

Adalah said in a statement that the situation amounts to the “abduction of foreign civilians in international waters without legal authority.”

The group further argued that the flotilla represents a lawful form of humanitarian solidarity in response to the long-standing blockade on Gaza Strip, which it said continues to contribute to severe hardship and shortages affecting the population, according to reports.
