US Judge Blocks Move to End Protected Status for Yemeni Nationals

(MENAFN) A federal court in the United States has blocked an effort by the administration of Donald Trump to end Temporary Protected Status for nationals of Yemen, according to reports.

The ruling, issued Friday by District Judge Dale E. Ho, prevents the termination from taking effect next week as planned.

In his order, the judge described Yemeni TPS holders as “ordinary, law-abiding people” who were granted protection due to the ongoing armed conflict in their home country.

“Plaintiff's motions to postpone the effective date of the termination of Yemen's TPS designation are granted,” Ho wrote.

Earlier in February, then-Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem announced plans to end temporary deportation protections for Yemeni nationals residing in the United States.

Yemen was first designated for Temporary Protected Status on September 3, 2015, due to the continuing conflict that made return unsafe for its citizens. The status has since been extended or renewed multiple times through 2024, as stated by reports.
