Iran Says US Seized Cargo Vessel, Warns of Retaliation

(MENAFN) According to reports, Iranian officials have confirmed that US forces intercepted and seized an Iranian-linked cargo vessel, warning that a response will follow soon.

Iranian military-linked sources stated that US forces disabled the ship’s navigation systems before boarding it, describing the operation as a violation of a ceasefire arrangement. They also alleged that the vessel came under fire prior to being taken under control by US personnel.

An Iranian military spokesperson accused the United States of conducting what he described as an unlawful maritime action, claiming that the boarding involved armed personnel and was carried out after the vessel had been disabled.

He further stated that Iran considers the incident a serious escalation and warned that military forces would respond in the near future, characterizing the operation as an act of aggression at sea.

Separately, US officials said the vessel was intercepted as part of an ongoing maritime security operation in the region. According to statements cited in reports, the ship was stopped after allegedly ignoring warnings from US naval forces while attempting to move through a restricted maritime area.

US sources also indicated that the ship sustained damage during the encounter and remains under US control following the operation.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions in regional waters, where maritime activity has increasingly become a focal point of broader geopolitical disputes involving shipping routes, sanctions, and military presence at sea.
