China Urges US to Halt Strikes on Civilian Nuclear Facilities

(MENAFN) According to reports, China has called on the United States to stop what it describes as attacks on peaceful nuclear facilities belonging to non-nuclear-weapon states.

As stated by reports, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun told journalists in Beijing that China recently submitted its national implementation report to the 11th Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.

Guo said the conference should urge the United States to take on what he described as its “special and primary responsibility” for nuclear disarmament. He also called for an end to actions targeting civilian nuclear infrastructure in non-nuclear states, as well as opposition to nuclear-sharing arrangements that contribute to the expansion of nuclear alliances.

According to reports, he further warned against developments such as efforts by Japan to expand its independent nuclear capabilities, which Beijing views as a concerning trend.

As stated by reports, Guo also raised concerns about nuclear proliferation risks linked to the trilateral security cooperation between the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia under the AUKUS framework.

Reports indicate that China’s submission also emphasized the need for dialogue on reducing nuclear risks, preventing nuclear conflict, and resolving nuclear-related issues through political and diplomatic channels.

It further reiterated support for protecting the rights of developing countries to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

As stated by reports, Beijing reaffirmed that it follows a self-defensive nuclear policy, maintains a no-first-use stance, and keeps its nuclear arsenal at the minimum level required for national security.
