S. Africa’s Democratic Alliance Faces Criticism Over Gaza Position
(MENAFN) South Africa’s Democratic Alliance (DA) has come under criticism and allegations of racial bias following its stance on the conflict in Gaza and its reluctance to label Israel’s military actions as genocide, according to reports.
During a party-related event in Johannesburg, activist and pastor Nigel Branken expressed strong opposition to the party’s positions and leadership, accusing it of discriminatory attitudes.
“I’m one of those people who really don’t like you. I’ve never liked the DA. I find the DA to be the most racist party, full of white supremacy,” Branken said.
He also questioned the party’s credibility on international humanitarian issues, stating: “The question for me is a big one. How can we even trust you to lead when you can’t acknowledge that there’s a genocide going on in Gaza?”
Branken further criticized the party’s reference to international legal processes, arguing that multiple global institutions and human rights organizations had already expressed concern over the situation. “You say we must wait for the ICJ to rule. The ICJ has found that there’s a plausible case of genocide. The ICJ has said we must respect the rights of people. Amnesty International has ruled. Human Rights Watch has ruled. The International Association of Genocide Scholars has ruled, and you continue to deny that there’s a genocide. Where is your morality?” he said, as parts of the audience reacted negatively.
The remarks highlight ongoing political tensions in South Africa surrounding foreign policy positions and domestic party divisions over the Gaza conflict.
