Bangladesh Appeals to Iran Over Blocked Vessel in Strait of Hormuz
(MENAFN) Bangladesh has formally asked Iran to ensure the safe transit of one of its ships through the Strait of Hormuz, according to a statement from the Foreign Ministry on Monday.
The Bangladesh-flagged vessel Banglar Joyjatra has reportedly been unable to proceed through the strategic waterway, despite earlier indications that Iran had allowed ships from selected friendly countries to pass through the route.
The request was raised by Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman during talks with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh on the sidelines of the Antalya Diplomacy Forum in Türkiye. Rahman urged the Iranian side to intervene and help secure the vessel’s passage through the strait.
He also expressed appreciation for Iran’s earlier decision to include Bangladesh among a group of countries whose vessels were permitted transit through the Hormuz route.
During the meeting, Rahman reaffirmed what was described as Bangladesh’s “balanced” stance on regional developments, stressing the need for restraint among all parties and advocating for disputes to be resolved through diplomatic engagement and dialogue, according to reports.
Separately, Iran’s ambassador in Dhaka, Jalil Rahimi Jahanabadi, previously voiced dissatisfaction on April 1 regarding a statement issued by Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry on the US-Israeli conflict involving Iran.
